Vicgtory Magnum Ness

Add A Little Wonderful-Ness

By Dain Gingerelli

In the last issue of Motorcycle Bagger, we showed you Victory’s new Magnum, a low-riding bagger with a 21″ front wheel that’s backed with enough custom accessories to create your own showstopper. And in that report, we gave you a brief rundown on how the Magnum performs on the city streets of Las Vegas. Now, having sampled the bike at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, we’re going to talk about the Magnum’s performance on the open road.

Magnum rideAs noted in our previous report, the Magnum is based on Victory’s best-selling model, the Cross Country. Even though a larger 21″ front wheel replaces the Cross Country’s more conventional 18-incher, the Magnum actually rides about an inch lower thanks to some shuffling of suspension components. The 43mm inverted fork’s travel was shortened from 5.1″ to 4.4″, and altering the rear suspension linkage reduced the rear shock travel from 4.7″ to 3-1/2″. Spring and damping rates were slightly increased to prevent bottoming over most bumps and dips in the road, and the net effect is a bike that steers and rides much like the Cross Country, which is to say smooth, straight, and predictable.

The Magnum negotiates turns with surprising ease …
